ABSTRACT
Turning points are a function of uncertainty—uncharted paths are as exciting as they are destabilising. The unexpected rise of Korean boy group BTS to global stardom changed standards of success and expanded possibilities for the whole K-pop industry. Our study focuses on meaning-making within ARMY, the BTS fandom, to understand how fans dealt with uncertainties along the group’s unprecedented career trajectory. Previous studies about BTS have often mentioned the 2017 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) and American Music Awards (AMAs) as tipping points in their career, but without elaborating on the significance of awards as their entry point to the American market. We build on literature using the semantic space of word embeddings to the study of culture and meaning, on nine years (2014-2022) of data from the largest English-language subreddit for BTS fans, r/bangtan. With embedding-based topic modelling, we find discursive vectors related to awards, and use similarity changes to compute how interpretations of concepts and categories have changed over the years, in relation to 2017 and 2019, their first invitations to the Grammy awards. We identify three emerging conventions, in response to uncertainty about BTS’s values, and the group’s future. Our findings show how computational measures of meaning relate to social formations and their valuation logics.
